Recorded in 1992 and released in 1993, Dance of December Souls is Katatonia's debut album — a landmark of early Scandinavian death-doom metal that predates and anticipates everything that would follow in the genre. Featuring Jonas Renkse on drums and vocals alongside guitarist Anders Nyström, the album is a study in glacial, grief-laden heaviness: slow-moving riffs, wailing vocals borrowed from the black metal underground, and an atmosphere of absolute desolation.
