Greg Sage and the Wipers emerged from Portland with a debut record that was both ahead of its time and completely outside the mainstream of American punk -- darker, more melodic, and more emotionally complex than almost anything coming out of the coasts at the time. "Return of the Rat," "Is This Real," and "Better Off Dead" are essential tracks. Kurt Cobain cited the Wipers as one of Nirvana's primary influences. This is the record that started it all.
