Before Dead Moon and Pierced Arrows, there was Zipper — Fred Cole's mid-70s Portland proto-punk outfit and the ground zero of his legend. Formed when Fred and Toody Cole returned to Portland after homesteading in Alaska, Zipper was the beginning of Whizeagle Records and Fred's long DIY rock career. Equal parts acid-fried psych, raw blistering guitar fireworks, proto-punk pummel, and bone-crunching heavy rock machismo — playing their whiskey-and-cigarette-fuelled music as loud and furious as possible. 2026 restock of Permanent Records' 40th Anniversary reissue — originals fetch up to $250.
