Commander Venus was co-founded by Conor Oberst, Tim Kasher, Robb Nansel, and Matt Bowen. Ben Armstrong replaced Matt Bowen on drums. This release is the group’s sophomore album and final record. The music utilizes Omaha indie rock and '90s emo styles. It was mastered using all-analog processes from original tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio. The recording was backed by Wind-up Records.
