Stream of Consciousness is the third and arguably most musically ambitious album from Los Angeles crossover pioneers Cryptic Slaughter. Released in 1988, the record captures a band rapidly evolving beyond the pure, chaotic blur of their earlier material. While drummer Scott Peterson maintains his signature breakneck velocity, guitarist Les Evans introduces far more complex, technical riffing, deeply influenced by the burgeoning Bay Area thrash metal scene. Frontman Bill Crooks delivers his trademark rapid-fire vocal assault over standout tracks like the blistering opener Circumstantial Evidence and the technically proficient M.A.D. Reissued by Relapse Records, this album remains a massively underappreciated gem of the 1980s crossover era, proving Cryptic Slaughter could play just as intelligently as they could play fast.
