Fred and Toody Cole's Dead Moon were the real deal -- self-recorded, self-released, fiercely DIY, and utterly uncompromising throughout their career. Defiance (1990) arrived at exactly the moment when the Pacific Northwest underground was about to explode commercially, and Dead Moon responded by doubling down on everything that made them essential: Toody's bass, Fred's guitar and gravelled vocals, Andrew Loomis's drumming, and a sound that owed more to '60s garage and proto-punk than anything fashionable at the time.
