HEATMISER: Dead Air Vinyl LP
Dead Air is the searing 1993 debut album from Portland's Heatmiser, effectively introducing the world to the immense songwriting talents of Elliott Smith and Neil Gust. Long before Smith became a hushed, acoustic indie-folk icon, he was trading furious, distorted guitar riffs and roaring vocals with Gust in this post-hardcore powerhouse. Blending the heavy, taut energy of Fugazi and Helmet with a deeply melodic Pacific Northwest grunge sensibility, Dead Air is a raw, aggressive, and highly compelling record. From the explosive opener "Still" to the brooding title track, the tension between the band's pop instincts and their abrasive execution is palpable. This reissue on Blue Color Vinyl via Frontier Records restores a vital, often-overlooked chapter in 90s indie rock history.
