Completed during a year in which J Dilla spent in and out of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and released on his birthday, February 7, 2006, Donuts gained particular poignancy when the producer passed away just three days later. What began as an idea to turn a particularly good demo beat tape into a full-length release became one of the defining works of his life — a "rap album without rappers" that transcended the rigid definitions of what a hip-hop album could be, and has since been recognised as an undisputed classic. This pressing features the alternative Donut Shop cover artwork by Jeff Jank.
