THE SPITBOY RULE: Tales of a Xicana in a Female Punk Band Book

The Spitboy Rule: Tales from a Xicana in a Female Punk Band is a memoir by Michelle Cruz Gonzales, the drummer and lyricist for the influential 1990s hardcore band Spitboy. The book chronicles the band's experiences, successes, and failures as they blazed a trail for women in the male-dominated punk scene. Gonzales recounts facing sexism, misogyny, and racism, particularly as a Xicana and the sole person of color in the band. She details Spitboy's international tours and their unapologetically feminist ethos, which prioritized serious engagement with women's issues and creating music that was as powerful as their male counterparts but distinctly feminine. The fast-paced, first-person narrative is illustrated with rare photos and flyers and features scenesters and bands from the era, including Econochrist, Green Day, and Fugazi. The memoir also serves as a personal journey of self-discovery for Gonzales as she navigates her identity within the punk underground.
