Founded in Oxnard, California in 1981 by Ron Baird, Stalag 13 were one of the "Big 4" Nardcore bands alongside Dr. Know, Agression, and Ill Repute. Heavily influenced by East Coast hardcore — Minor Threat, SSD, Bad Brains, DYS — they were among the first West Coast hardcore bands to incorporate Straight Edge themes. In Control, recorded in 1984, remains a definitive document of the Nardcore scene and California hardcore at its rawest.
