THE FACIST GROVE THING: A History of Thatcher's Britain in 21 Mixtapes Book

The Fascist Groove Thing: A History of Thatcher's Britain in 21 Mixtapes by Hugh Hodgesÿis a unique historical account of the late 1970s and 1980s in Britain, told through the lens of pop and punk music. Author Hugh Hodges presents the era's social and political landscape through a series of "mixtapes" or playlists, each focusing on a specific issue or theme of Margaret Thatcher's rule. The book analyzes the defiant and often sardonic dialogue that artists like The Clash, The Specials, and The Pet Shop Boys created in response to Thatcherite policies. Featuring contributions from musicians Dick Lucas and Boff Whalley, as well as an annotated discography, this book argues that pop music served as a crucial form of cultural resistance, making a "glorious, boredom-smashing noise" against the political climate of the time.
